The old Venetian border city of Korčula is where I was born and where I grew up. I know all its narrow streets – the picturesque ruins of its ancient abandoned houses were my playground as a child. My friends and I would sometimes play soccer in its magnificent
cathedral square, only to be chased away by the cathedral’s superintending priest or nun.



As I grew up, I began to notice things about the old town that aroused an acute curiosity in me. So, no longer a playground, it became an education: houses with unusual architectural details such as elaborate coats of arms carved into their stone lintels, magnificent balconies, monuments with foreign inscriptions, and many more things triggered a desire to learn their stories.


In my teens, I started reading about Korčula’s history, its art and architecture. From that moment on I was devouring any book I could lay my hands on. In my late 20s I moved to The Netherlands for my family, where I continued to read all I could find. Then I started widening my knowledge putting Korčula within the broader historical perspective of the Balkans, Europe and Asia.



I would love to share with you my knowledge and insights of Korčula; my perspective of this tiny city that encapsulates so much of the world’s history.
